Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us

June 7, 2011

This video is well worth 10 minutes of your time.  Great concepts and a whole new way of looking at motivation.

How can you hire highly skilled workers, persuade them to work for free, and then release your product to the masses for free? It’s not impossible; in fact, several active companies such as Linux and Wikipedia has accomplished this feat. In this video,

the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce gives a comprehensive animated seminar on what motivates workers to work, and how to take advantage of that as a business. This video, which is animated entirely on a whiteboard, is extremely valuable, especially for those marketing and sales professionals. The animation is clean, clever, and imaginative, and illustrates the various studies and research used in this piece extremely well.

Mobile Media Listed Among Top Career Choices

June 2, 2011

With graduation season fully underway and a new onslaught of job seekers, Henry DeVries, Assistant Dean for External Affairs for Continuing Education at University of California San Diego and co-author of the new book “Closing America’s Job Gap”, writes about top industries poised for success in 2011.

DeVries, through extensive research and trend monitoring, lists the hottest and most sustainable industries that recent grads should target.

Among the top of the pack: Mobile Media

According to DeVries’ team, UC San Diego Extension, today’s four billion mobile phone users outnumber both Internet users and land-line owners. Cell phones and other mobile devices are now multifunction devices that enable users to surf the Web, listen to music, download podcasts, use maps, access global positioning satellites, shoot and send photos and videos, and send text messages. With the countless new software applications, the number of ways to use smart phones is exploding.

Graphic designers, videographers and video editors, casual game/app developers and software engineers are in demand.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, software engineers will see an increase of 32 percent, with an expected 295,000 new jobs created over the decade 2008 to 2018 — a much greater increase than other occupations. Massive growth is also expected in mobile video. The BLS predicts more than 23,000 film and video editing jobs will be added through the year 2016.
