How Tablets Are Transforming Business Intelligence

May 15, 2012

I recently have been looking into purchasing a tablet and during my research for different ways tablets can increase business productivity I came across this article from TechCrunch on the various ways to monitor news. I like to keep an eye on the news daily and I am always interested in knowing what’s going on locally and globally. I got some really great ideas on news apps and how to simplify my daily news feeds.

Staying on top of your game and understanding the competitive landscape is essential to winning in the modern business world. A huge component to staying ahead of the curve is keeping a close eye on competitors in your market, which entails maintaining a watchful eye on industry news. Some companies turn to expensive news monitoring services to keep track of their respective industry, but in reality there are more viable options. Emerging tablet news and information services like Flipboard, Pulse and others are proving an incredible companion to business and consulting executives in staying current with industry changes occurring around them.

Jeff Cavins, CEO of Fuzebox, recently wrote in Business Insider that the explosive uptake of tablet computers is fueling the growth of what he called the new “iPad economy.” Cavins said: “The iPad is shifting the way businesses function, changing how executives interact and transforming the economics of today’s business operations.”

The iPad economy is a growing reality across the globe, and businesses are turning to enterprise apps to help them succeed. Simple RSS readers are used to condense multiple streams of content from a variety of sources into single channels, granting users access to diverse content all in one place. Some applications have further simplified news aggregation by using innovative search technology that goes beyond the function of RSS readers to deliver richer streams of highly targeted information to business users – a critical asset to businesses large and small.

Small Business Tips: How to Stop Cyber Attacks

April 17, 2012

I am someone who is on the internet most of the day. At my desk or on my phone I am working on something that has me connected to the world-wide web. I recently have been getting an increase of spam mail and even spam text messages, which makes me nervous. So I did a little research on how to protect myself from the dreaded cyber attack, hackers and spammers.

“Since an increasing number of small business owners are using internet for advertising, promoting or for doing some basic activities, they are becoming an easy prey for hackers who are still living at large. Though steps have been taken both at region and country level to contain such cases, there is no apparent signs of immediate relief. Small business organizations just like their big corporate counterparts are very much susceptible to external and internet security threats and if these treats are overlooked, this might have a serious consequences later on. Here we are going to share 5 tips that a small business company can adopt.” Just take a look:

Deadzones: What Does LTE Stand For?

February 23, 2012
This is an older article from deadzones.com  but offers a good explanation of LTE.
LTE = Long Term Evolution

Long Term Evolution (LTE).  It is a new radio platform technology that will allow carriers to give you higher wireless upload and download speeds currently between 5-12 mbps but expected to increase. Verizon Wireless,  AT&T & MetroPCS in the United States and several worldwide LTE carriers began rolling out the new network in 2009.  The world’s first publicly available LTE service was opened by TeliaSonera in the two Scandinavia in December of 2009.
LTE and is part of the GSM evolutionary path beyond 3G technology, following EDGE, UMTS, HSPA (HSDPA and HSUPA combined) and HSPA Evolution (HSPA+). LTE is a set of enhancements to the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) which was introduced in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 8.  HSPA Evolution is a stepping-stone of speeds to LTE for many carriers that will be rolled out slowly. Carriers began working on LTE in 2004 3GPP and initial deployment of LTE is targeted for 2010 and 2011. The objective of LTE is to provide a high performance radio access that offers good signal coverage in vehicles that are moving and that can coexist with HSPA and earlier networks. Carriers can scale bandwidth to migrate their networks and users from HSPA to LTE over time in areas that need it most.

Testimonial Tuesday: Thanks zBoost! This is a REAL product that REALLY works!

February 21, 2012

Great testimonials are one of the best parts of any business.  It’s so fulfilling to hear your product is the solution to a real problem, especially when it involves a small business.  Wi-Ex received the following letter from Bruce Cramer, VP of Total Building Environments South (www.tbesouth.com), a facility automation systems integrator, that helps diverse facility/building control systems talk to each other.

We have a small company and I work out of my home.  Just moved to a new (new to me) home and found that the Sprint (Virgin) coverage was just terrible in this part of Pinellas County Florida.

Barely got one bar and dropped almost every call.  Looked on the Sprint coverage map and sure enough they do a really bad job in this area!

Searched on the web and at EBay for a booster device, found lots of stuff, mostly BS!

Finally found zBoost!  Bought a supposedly used zBoost SOHO (YX545) from Amazon for $128!  When received I was very surprised to find it looking brand new, in what appeared to be the original wrappers!

Took me about 20 minutes to install with the antenna on top a 20’ pole on the side of my single story house.

WOW, a 4 to 5 bar signal.  It does vary down to 2 bars or so, but the reception is noticeably better and no dropped calls.

Thanks zBoost!  This is a REAL product that REALLY works!

Thanks for a great product!

What are SOPA and PIPA and Why Should You Care?

January 18, 2012

Wikipedia is having a 24 hour black-out, Google has blacked out its famous logo and WordPress has placed censor warnings across their front page. If you unsure of the companies motives, they are showing signs of solidarity in the effort to stop SOPA and PIPA.

What are SOPA and PIPA?

In an effort to stop online piracy, the House has presented the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) while the Senate proposed companion bill, the Protect IP Act (PIPA).

According to Braden Goyette, NY Daily News, “The bills were designed to stop piracy of copyrighted music, movies, and television shows. But critics including Google, Twitter, and some of the original architects of the Internet itself, say the legislation could censor the Internet, hobble online innovation and change what made the Internet what it is today.”

SOPA and PIPA intends to target websites whose servers are hosted or whose domain names are registered outside of the U.S. Supporters of the bills claim that this won’t effect American websites, however,  many American companies have domain names registered overseas. American domains that link to foreign websites may also be targeted if the linked websites are suspected of hosting pirated material.

Many fear that, while the intentions of SOPA and PIPA are good, ultimately, regulations from the bill will lead to censorship across the internet, as well as, company crippling lawsuits.

Unlike conventional collaboration products, Social Office does more than just enhance communication with new tools. Telework smoothes Washington commute after earthquake

August 25, 2011

Two large interruptions in one week will certainly be a test for teleworking on the East Coast.  First the very unexpected earthquake on Tuesday and now the much dreaded Hurricane Irene.  This article from the  Federal Times outlines how the Patent and Trademark Office is benefitting from teleworking when being in the office is just not possible.

By NICOLE BLAKE JOHNSON | Last Updated:August 24, 2011
When employees at the Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, Va., left their cubicles early after Tuesday’s 5.8-maginitude earthquake, their work went with them.

Apart from the evacuation process, little time was lost during the workday thanks to the agency’s robust telework program, Danette Campbell, senior adviser for telework, said at a FedScoop event Wednesday. “Once the announcement [to leave early] was made, those folks that were outside, who had their car keys, could go ahead and take off and go home — and continue to work.”

“If every agency approached telework the way Denette and PTO have done, you would see massive change,” Johnson said. “People are just now waking up to the full possibilities of telework.”

To read the entire article go to: http://www.federaltimes.com/article/20110824/AGENCY02/108240301/

Is your company prepared to telework in case of an emergency?  There are many things to consider when setting up a telework plan but one of the most important is keeping your teleworker connected.  A zBoost cell phone signal booster may be needed if the teleworker’s home or home office is in a dead zone.
